San Diego Cesar Chavez Committee seeks to inspire community involvement by teaching and celebrating social justice.  We strive to empower children, families and community by creating a culture of service, engagement and leadership.

Whether you answer the call for charity or service, our committee welcomes you to join our efforts in a variety of ways.  We are continually searching for ways to channel the energy San Diegans bring us each year while growing traditions that have been a part of our committee for many years.

After the passing of Cesar E. Chavez, San Diego community residents and leaders, along with The Barrio Youth Center, began a grassroots movement to honor the life and legacy of Chavez. This movement, during its first year of existence, blossomed into an march through the Barrio Logan community and produced the Cesar E. Chavez Humanitarian Award and The Cesar E. Chavez Social Justice Award, which were presented at the Barrio Station Dinner.

In 1999, The San Diego Cesar E. Chavez Commemoration Committee continued the vision of those early marches and continued honoring Cesar through a community celebration. In addition Richard Ybarra, son-in law of Cesar E. Chavez, founded and hosted the 1st San Diego Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Breakfast. Attendees were composed mostly of College students, community residents and leaders as they continued a San Diego tradition of civic activism and community service that Chavez himself had noted in his early visits to San Diego.

From these humble beginnings, our committee, comprised of community volunteers has expanded our program offerings to include the High School Essay Contest, Day of Service, Mass, Breakfast, Service-Learning Educator Workshop, Parade/March and Community Celebration.  We welcome new members to the committee as well as ways to bring to life the many ideas brought forth to promote justice.
